Step Four: Skills

A character's Skills determine what they are capable of, and rank from 0 (Unskilled) to 10 (Epic). With bonuses, a character can in theory gain higher than 10 Ranks in a Skill. Characters begin play with five Skills. The first Skill has a Rank of 3, the second and third have a Rank of 2, and the last two have a Rank of 1. Each Skill has a list of examples that the character can use the Skill for.

Crafting Skill This Skill can be used with the Crafting rules. Consult the Crafting Chapter for more detail.
Income Skill This Skill can be used once a month to generate money. Consult the Resources Chapter for more detail.
Social Skill This Skill can be used for influencing others and performing Social Attacks.
Specialty Skill This Skill requires the character to choose a Specialty for each Rank they possess in the Skill.
Weapon Skill This Skill is used in combat and grants the character the ability to use or Craft this weapon type. Consult the Crafting Chapter for more detail.

Skills can go from 0 (Unskilled) to 10 (Epic) in scale. A character begins with five skills. The first skill has a rating of 3, the second and third have a rating of 2, and the last two have a rating of 1. Skills grant the character a pool of talents they can use in the game.

Step Five Size


Acrobatics

The Skill to be able to move with grace and ease, including the ability to balance, do back flips, to roll, and to perform tumbling. This Skill may be used to avoid being tripped, to jump long distances, or to control a fall to minimize damage. This Skill may be used for Active Defence or as a Performance Skill.

Animal Ken

The Skill to be able to handle animals, understand animals, and train animals. The character can also use this Skill to replace the Medicine Skill when dealing with animals, and may replace the Survival Skill when attempting to identify and follow animal tracks.

Archery

The Skill to be able to use a bow, in addition to the ability to craft or repair bows and arrows. The character may also make a Mental + Archery roll against the Resolve of another to identify their Archery Skill Rank when seeing the Skill in use.

Artistry

The Skill to be able to create works of art. The character must choose one Specialty each time this Skill is taken. This Skill may only be used with a Specialty that the character possesses. If the character does not have the appropriate Specialty, the character rolls Unskilled.

Athletics

The Skill to be able to jump, lift weights, or run. This Skill is often used to augment the character's natural abilities and can also be used to increase a character's Defence.

Awareness

The Skill to be aware of a the character's surroundings, allowing them to also sense the supernatural or unnatural. The Skill covers the ability to sense the presence of danger as well as the use of supernatural or psychic powers, as well as the ability to detect traps or ambushes.

Blades

The Skill to be able to use a sword or other bladed weapon, in addition to the ability to craft or repair bladed weapons. The character may also make a Mental + Blades roll against the Resolve of another to identify their Blades Skill Rank when seeing the Skill in use.

Business

The Skill to understand the principles behind conducting a business. This Skill also gives the character the ability to know the current price of items on the market, how to haggle, and how to determine what the quality of an item is before purchasing it.

Climb

The Skill to climb rough surfaces or to navigate over rough terrain.

Craft

The Skill to be able to create equipment and other impressive works.. The character must choose one Specialty each time this Skill is taken. This Skill may only be used with a Specialty that the character possesses. If the character does not have the appropriate Specialty, the character rolls Unskilled. Criminal

The Skill to understand and work with the criminal underworld. The character can navigate the criminal network of a region and make deals or hire muscle to perform criminal activities.

Crossbow

The Skill to be able to use a crossbow, in addition to the ability to craft or repair crossbows and bolts. The character may also make a Mental + Crossbow roll against the Resolve of another to identify their Crossbow Skill Rank when seeing the Skill in use.

Diplomacy

The Skill of using diplomacy, and the art of negotiation and treaty. The character knows how to navigate the courts and how to negotiate with others in a way which offends as few as possible.

Disguise

The Skill of altering the voice and adjusting how one acts to conceal their identity. The character can alter their appearance using clothing, stance, and voice, to appear as someone else.

Dodge

The Skill to evade harm by attempting to move out of the way.

Drive

The Skill to drive wagons, chariots, and carriages. The character can operate and steer animal-driven vehicles, and knows how to do simple repairs if one gets damaged.

Empathy

The Skill to sense the emotions of others, and to guess the emotional state someone else might be in.

Endurance

The Skill of being resilient and dealing with straining or fatiguing conditions. The character has developed the means of coping with exerting themselves for extended periods of time and facing gruelling conditions.

Entangle

The Skill to be able to use flexible and entangling weapons, in addition to the ability to craft or repair such weapons.

Exotic

The Skill to be able to use exotic and impromptu weapons, in addition to the ability to craft or repair such weapons.

Firearm

The Skill to be able to use long arms and side arms , in addition to the ability to craft or repair such weapons.

Herbalist

The Skill to identify and use herbs and plants, as well as the skill to identify them and their properties. The character is also capable of creating remedies and drugs which can be used to help or hinder the user, or to create alchemical potions which produce astounding effects.

Impact

The character is trained in the use of impact weapons, such as maces and hammers. The character may also use this Skill for repairing or crafting Impact weapons. The character may make a Mental + Impact roll to identify an opponent's Impact Skill when seeing the Skill in use. With an instant action and 1 essence, the character may add their Impact Skill to their Defence as an Active Defence when equipped with an Impact weapon.

Integrity

The Skill to be able to exert one's will against outside influence, and to create the impression of honesty and integrity if need be. This Skill is useful both for keeping a character's integrity intact, and for maintaining the impression of integrity.

Investigation

The Skill to observe a scene or gathered information and search for clues or even a common thread, granting the character the means to come to logical conclusions.

Larceny

The Skill of prestidigitation, allowing a character to perform sleight of hand, or pick locks. The character knows how to perform acts of misdirection and how to break into buildings.

Linguistics

The Skill associated with knowing multiple languages or how to use languages with skill and effectiveness.

Lore

The Skill associated with having detailed knowledge in a variety of fields.

Medicine

The Skill to perform healing on others and the basic understanding of the body. The character knows a combination of simple rites that have been handed down for many generations, and has most likely learned a number of techniques from the studies of the Joshuites. The character can perform basic surgery and cure most basic diseases while preventing infection.

Meditation

The Skill of controlling the body, purifying the essence of the individual and soothing the mind.

Occult

The Skill to understand the world and the hidden mysteries that exist. The character understands the spirit world, and the many levels that exist to the realms. This Skill does not give the character access to Sorcery, but it does assist in understanding the principles of magic, the psychic arts, faith, and superstition. Most people in Kith Kanaan have some understanding of the spirit world, and know simple rites to keep spirits at bay or to attract helpful spirits.

Perform

The Skill to be able to perform in a way pleasing to an audience. The character must choose one Specialty each time this Skill is taken. This Skill may only be used with a Specialty that the character possesses. If the character does not have the appropriate Specialty, the character rolls Unskilled.

Pole

The Skill to be able to use spears and pole arms, in addition to the ability to craft or repair such weapons.

Presence

The Skill of drawing attention to the character and keeping it focussed there, and the knowledge of how to use that attention to the utmost. Presence is more concentrated on dealing with others on a one-on-one manner, while Socialize deals with groups.

Profession

The Skill to be able to perform professionally within an occupation or a field of work. The character knows how to perform their occupation and may use it to gain income or to craft. The character must choose one Specialty each time this Skill is taken. This Skill may only be used with a Specialty that the character possesses. If the character does not have the appropriate Specialty, the character rolls Unskilled.

Ride

The Skill to ride animals as well as how to breed and care for riding animals.

Sail

The Skill to operate a craft which uses water to travel, including ships and galleons. The character can perform simple repairs on the ship (see Crafting) and has limited knowledge of navigation. If the character has more than five ranks in Sail, they may pilot air ships (assuming they find one).

Search

The Skill to observe a scene to gather information or to find something which may be hidden.

Shield

The Skill to be able to use a shield as both a weapon and as a means of defence, in addition to the ability to craft or repair shields.

Socialize

The Skill to influence, speak to, or entertain groups. The character knows how to speak in a convincing manner.

Stealth

The Skill to move and act with silence and to remain unseen. The character knows how to use camouflage, how to avoid making a sound, and how to use shadow or misdirection to avoid detection.

Streetwise

The Skill to understand and work on the street. The character knows how the city operates and where to get food or good deals. The character also knows what areas are controlled by gangs, and how to get friends to help them survive.

Subterfuge

The Skill to lie and bluff. The character can hide their true intentions with finesse, and prevent others knowing their true motives.

Survival

The Skill to survive in hostile regions. The character must choose one Specialty each time this Skill is taken. This Skill may only be used with a Specialty that the character possesses. If the character does not have the appropriate Specialty, the character rolls Unskilled.

Swim

The Skill of being able to swim in water.

Thrown

The Skill to be able to use thrown weapons such as bola or javelins, in addition to the ability to craft or repair such weapons.

Unarmed

The Skill to be able to use their body as a weapon, as well as gauntlets and other weapons which use the body's natural abilities.

War Craft

The Skill to perform battle tactics. The character knows how to handle and train groups, using strategy and tactics, and can keep a military unit functioning and alive. The character knows how to feed and move an army, and keep troop morale high. When engaged in mass combat, all Combat Skills are restricted to their War Craft Skill.
