Name

Hadrian (and other variants, Adrien, Adrinna, Adrin, Hadrinna etc) is not an uncommon Joshuite name for both girls and boys. The root of the name comes from the old Domeran DARAS or DARASH meaning demon. The first 'A' is an example of the Domeran A of Antithesis (i.e. symmetrical vs. asymmetrical). Lake Adrias is recorded as one of the geographical features of the Second Garden, at which Joshua is said to have met with his followers, its name most auspiciously marking the land around it as one anathema to demons: the Adrian (adjective form of Adrias) Plain. Later church pronuncuation of the name added the aspiration to the beginning, changing Lake Adrias to Lake Hadrias and the Adrian plain to the Hadrian plain. "Hadrian," then, as a name, either signifies a person from the region of Lake Adrias, or, by extension, a follower of Joshua (who met in that region), or, most widely, a person who is anathema to demons: superstitious parents would name a child Hadrian (or variant) to prevent demons from carrying away the baby (a common explanation for infant death).

Deditio Arci

Recognized by most urbane Tarantans and Joshuites as a barbaric and counterproductive practice, but nonetheless still widely practiced in poor rural families. Deditio Arci is the name of a prayer recited by a newly married couple, a prayer to Adonai that their home be blessed with prosperity and fertility, in return for which favor a child, usually the third-born, but sometimes the first-born, is dedicated to the service of the Church. There have been some efforts on the part of the Tarantan government to put an end to this practice, which they see as unfair to the children and harmful to the church, but the practice, though dying out, is still too wide-spread to effectively control.

Appearance

From the top of the tabby-cat's soft pink nose, a field of snow white fur arises, first thin and sleek, then flaring into ruffly fluffs of down that circle wide, bright blue eyes before drifting into mottled stripes of orange and pallid yellow. Ears perch up top, orange triangles (almost too large for the little creature) encircled by wisps of lighter yellow and inlaid in pink. Her muzzle, small and white, seems a central point from which stripes of yellow and orange radiate out across young feline cheeks.

A round grey tunic-collar cuffs around her neck, its long slim sleeves molding to her arms and ending in buttoned cuffs. Fitting well over the undertunic, adding a glistening layer of grey to its matte grey undertone, a suit of scalemail flashes in the sunlight. Above the suit, a long leathern overtunic of deep red falls to her elbows, a slight flare at the ends of the sleeves, and, at the hem, to just below mid-thigh. It's buttoned down for easy donning, but the buttons only go down to the waist, and the back of the garment is slit in a fashion to mirror the opening at the front, resulting in four panels of deep red field which flutter around her legs when she walks or when the breeze goes hard to wind. On each panel the cross of the sword of Joshua's heart is displayed in caring worksmanship, a thorny rose creeping around each blade and hilt. Below these flaps her trim, tight legs are easily seen encased in scale mail: the tops of large and heavy deep brown boots rise up almost to her knees, and they plant the cat to the ground with a bit of a bottom-heavy look.

Over the top of her clerical tunic two brown leather belts are strapped at cross-angles across her chest, holding to her back a pair of crossed sheathes, a longer one on top of the pair holding a longsword ready for her strong right arm, while a shorter one crossing underneath the longer holds a shortsword ready for her off-hand. Her right shoulder bears the weight of a light metal shield when she hasn't pulled it down onto her left arm for a more active defense. Attached to a small clasp attached to her armour near her left shoulderblade, a wooden cross dangles inelegantly, evidently well-loved, parts of it darker than others where the kitten's fingers have held it tight in prayer. Inscribed in young-looking writing, messy almost to the point of looking like runes instead of legible print, along the backsides of her boots are scriptural quotes from the Book of David. "I serve Adonai," quoth the left, and the right: "And came when I was needed."
