Brotherhood History

The Brotherhood of the Book is believed to have been founded just after the Age of Dragons. The religious order consists of the Oracles, charged with recording the history of Kith Kanaan, and the Shield Maidens who protect the Oracles as they travel the continent. While the term ‘brotherhood’ and ‘maiden’ are used, the temple accepts men in women in either role.

The Order does not speak often of their duties and most simply consider them to be historians and nothing more. Their libraries are vast, with multiple copies of any given work spread out to ensure the survival of the world’s histories. It is believed by the Order that each individual contains a divine spark – a portion of Arion’s essence, and that exploring his creation and delving into the secrets of the world helps to strengthen that spark. Eventually, Arion will one day be reborn through the process of reincarnation.

Those who do understand the Brotherhood also know that the Oracles have access to countless secrets. With the Oracle’s ability to see into the past and to know the thoughts of those around them, many powerful individuals dislike the presence of the Order within their domains. As such, the Shield Bearers are charged with protecting the oracles at all times, ensuring that the Oracle is not alone, and not vulnerable. Those worried that the Oracles will share the dark secrets of the rich and powerful do not truly need to worry. The Brotherhood is a faith sworn to observation, rather than action. They are not charged with doing what is ‘right’, but are instead charged with providing an accurate assessment of the history of Kith Kanaan for their god.

The Oracles believe that people have their own Fate and Destiny, and that it is not the purpose of the Oracles to dictate what one does. If the Oracles feel the need to intervene due to a threat to Creation or the Tapestry, they will subtly nudge the proper people in the right direction, or provide some hints of what is to come. They do not, however, feel obligated to explain themselves or the events around them. Doing so robs the individual of free will, forcing them to walk a singular path towards their Fate. To the Oracle, the right to choose what path one takes is just as important as the destination.
