Active Defence

Active Defence is a means for a character to actively avoid a Mental, Physical, Social, or Spiritual Attack made against them. Unless the attack specifically states otherwise, or the target is specifically Helpless, a character can always perform an Active Defence. An Active Defence costs 1 Essence, and an Instant Action. If an ability is used to augment an Active Defence or is used in place of an Active Defence, the Essence cost of the ability is increased by one. This will usually be mentioned within the description of the ability. The Skill used is usually determined by the Trait that is the target of the attack.

  • Defence: This Trait is used to resist physical attacks for the most part, or things which can be seen and deflected or avoided. Acrobatics, Dodge, or a Weapon Skill is the primary method for dealing with these forms of attacks. If the player can explain it, other Skills may also be used, such as Endurance (toughing it), or Stealth (cover)
  • Resolve: This Trait is used to deal with attacks against the person's personality. Integrity is the primary Skill used to protect against such attacks, though Presence (intimidation) can also be used, as can Socialize (support of peers). Again, if the player can explain it, other Skills may be used.
  • Resistance: This Trait is used to deal with unnatural attacks made against the target. Meditation is the primary Skill used to protect against such attacks, though Integrity (sense of self) or Awareness (awareness of the nature of the effect) could also be used. As it bears repeating: If the player can logically explain why a Skill would be viable, then it will usually be accepted.

Additional and Minimum Successes and Active Defence

If the defending character has Additional Successes for the Attribute or Skill used, the character gains a +1 to the defending Trait for each Additional Success they possess. If the defending character has Minimum Successes for the Attribute or Skill used, the attacker suffers a -1 Success to their attack roll for each Minimum Success the defender has. The maximum bonus allowed is equal to the character's Trait or their Might, whichever is lower - a Growth 1 character with a Defence of 3 is only allowed to benefit from 3 Additional or Minimum Successes, for example.

Unskilled

Even if unskilled, a character can use Active Defence. The Skill provides a +0 bonus to the Trait, but other factors may provide a bonus to the character's Defence. This may be from abilities or other benefits that the character possesses.
